As a student of aviation I have studied the science of lift and how an aircraft will generally fly and stay under control. I felt like I had a pretty good handle on things for 3 axis aircraft, but ... Read More »

Sounds like you are haveing a great time. Glad your first flight went well. I fly out of a turf farm here so I do not need a radio and don't carry one. But I am near the edge of the air space of an active towered field. I call the tower with my cell phone before I fly and I generally stay under 1,000 ft. They are OK with that.
For a GPS I have gotten a Garmin 60CSx. It includes a barametric altimeter. I mount it right on the wing bar so it is readily visible. It displayes altitude, ground speed, and a map of exactly where I am. It also records the complete flight so I can review it later and see the distance covered and flight time. It is a great unit.
I fly mostly early mornings to take advantage of the calm air. I find it more enjoyable before the thermals get going.

Thanks for staying in touch.
I flew the Raven for the 1st time this morning! Things went great as far as the trike is concerned. I built and test flew the trike under my instructor's eye, and he operates from a tower controlled airport that allows ultralight activity. This requires a radio, and i've had some issues getting one set up without having feedback and interference from the engine. I'm making progress on that though...
The trike is deffinetely small, light, and requires a little more attention to the weather than the larger trikes I trained in. But all in all I think it is perfect for my first trike. It's simplicity is what really attracts me.
I can fully understand every part of it, and I like being able to know everything that is going on.
It is so easy to fly; slow and gentle. I hope to get much use out of it.
After flying it my instructer dubbed it "Such a little Darling!"
I'm adding a foot throttle, and will have a GPS and Vario mounted off the keel between my legs. And hopefully will get a BRS balisitic parachute fitted sometime this year. Still researching that...
It's been a long road, but getting to finally fly it was very rewarding after all the research, waiting, thinking, and spending money.
I'll keep you posted on my progress.
Thanks for the interest.
Justin
I'm really interested in how you are making out with your Raven. Have you taken it out for a spin yet?
Jack
My first trike is mine for keeps.
Assembly is complete, and were ready for the first flight!
The Dream is realized.
Congrats on selecting the Raven. You won't be disappointed.

I ordered a Raven with a Falcon wing last June and took delivery in mid-September. I find it perfect for what I want to do--fly low and slow. I keep it in my garage at home and take it to a field about 5 miles away whenever I want to fly. Even though the weather in Connecticut has not been good this winter, I have managed to put 18 hours on it. And I am really looking forward to spring. One thing I really like about the Raven is that there is no front post so your view is completely unobstructed.

I'm now finally ready to purchase my first trike.
I have soloed a tukan trike with a north wing and have 15 hrs.
I'm interested in "lighter" trikes such as the raven soaring trike, Northwing ATF, Maverick etc...
Basically I want to fly under FAR part 103.
I'm really alone in my area as far as ultralighters go, so please, any input from owners of similar trikes is GREATLY appreciated.
