Engine out hard landing

Here is the latest on my engine out mishap. The FAA sent an investigator and a mechanic to Espanola yesterday to inspect the wreck. They saw the first point of impact on the centerline, then the second impact 90 feet further, and skid marks for 200 feet after that. We had been flying for about 30 minutes when I noticed the water temp running warmer that it usually reads. Could it be that I didn't tighten up the radiator cap fully when I preflighted? I wanted to land and check it out. I greased… Continue

What animal do you worry about crossing your runway on final?

Looks like both of these guys were at the wrong place at the wrong time. No winner here.

Spring winds, go away...

The paradox of Chimayo-Religion VS drugs.

Lest you think I have not been flying lately because I have not been posting stories of adventure, I decided to scribble a few lines to assure those who are interested (very few I'm sure) that I am indeed still flying and loving it. I we… Continue

Short cross country trip

I went to Belen to fly Jeff's home turf and we got a few hours in Friday evening. Jeff showed me all the cool pplaces he flies to. On the trip back to Espanola my first stop was at Double Eagle II. Frank, I was in the Bode building BSing with the counter girl when I saw a trike taxi out to 17. Was that you? Once I got in the… Continue

Hey John, I refered John Olson to you about your part-out. He can't seem to ring you up. He wants a 582.

Hi John:
I just joined the trike pilot social board. I fly out of Williamsburg, VA. I had a forced landing in my Airborne XT-912, ethanol in gas holds water in suspension. After 30 minutes in the air, the engine quit. I had little landing options and brought the trike down in a small side yard. It was a hard landing and we walked away; but the trike landing gear was seriously broken on one side.
I heard from Joe Pfaff, in Warrington, VA, that you had a hard landing and were parting out your trike. I wonder if you have anything that would be of use to me??
Anyway, I am happy to know that you are ok, sorry to hear about the trike.

I learned to fly with John Kammeries out in Arizona; what a blast!!

Regards from Williamsburg,

Hey John,
I'm pretty slow at getting around to these blogs. Usually I find them too political to participate and I'm not into the politics, only the fun and learning.
4th of July is still on, we will talk more about it once I get back from Newfoundland. (Wish I could take my trike up there).

Hey John, good to hear from you. I want to start by saying, you have a beautiful trike! I have never been out to the fly-in but I have some of their Dvds. It's good to know the flying community can come together and share in their passion of flying. I actually traded my Sabre trike for my first powered paraglider four years ago. I loved the speed (the trike) but I think I like the grass surfing the powered paragliding offers me. Very low and slow. Oh yeah, it also allows me to launch from my backyard! I think the next step down in basic flying would be to strap a lawn chair to some balloons!

God Bless and be safe.

Hi John, I have been following all of you on "new mexico-trikers.com" for some time. My wife and I are presently in a move from Littleton, CO, to Albuquerque. New Mexico is not new to me though, I graduated from UNM. My parents (now deceased) lived in Albuquerque from 1967 on and I have a cousin that lives there. About six months ago I took an intro ride with Frank out of DEII. I have been struggling with whether to go with a 3-axis Remos G-3 or opt for a trike, I am very impressed with the DTA Voyageur II. I like your approach to flying; drive there, camp, and see the countryside. We have a Cummins Dodge dually with a Arctic Fox slide-in camper. I want to tow my aircraft and that is why a trike is so attractive. Lugging around a S-LSA with an empennage adds so much more bulk. Also I like the view of the earth below from a trike. Earlier in my life I had made more than one stab at getting my private pilots license, but had to put it on the back burner for one reason or another. I have accummulated about 100 hours. I have been retired for 4 years now, I am 62, and have the free time and the encouragement of the sport pilot designation to get back into the air. Another reason that I am inclined to go with a trike is that Albuquerque has such an active group of trikers. It is always nice to have someone that understands your enthusiasm for flying. I am a lucky guy, my wife is all for this. I have a friend here in Denver that has a C-172 and his wife refuses to go up with him, the plane puts a strain on their marriage. We will be in Albuquerque starting around April 9, so I hope to make the next meeting at JB"s. Any advice about making this big of a decision, on both type and model, would be most welcome. I look forward to any input that you and others may have. Stay well. Joe

p.s. I retired from DOE Rocky Flats. Do you work for the lab in Los Alamos? Delete Comment

Altitude no problem --- last summer we ( Mike Addis and I) flew our Sabres out of Show Low, Az. One day out of St.John Az the Alt of 7,000 ft and temp in the 90's other aircraft where having trouble getting off the deck. We taxied out mid field lifted off in 200 ft and climbed out at 700 ft/min. We both have Rotax 503's.

Question --- our machines are "N" numbered. And although we have passed our written test, we have not finished our check ride yet. Is this a problem for you guys?

Sounds like fun! I'm about three years away from retiring from the Austin (Tx) Fire Dept, then hopefully I'll get to do some traveling and flying in some really neat places. I don't have a trike yet. I currently fly a powered parachute, and am just now getting into trikes. Sometime in the next several months, I'll probably sell the PPC and start looking for a trike. Your videos definitely inspire and motivate me to make the transition!
